We Swam With Stingrays

After a day at sea, our Disney Cruise stopped at Grand Cayman. We had arranged a tour with Native Way Watersports to Stingray City, Coral Gardens, and Star Fish Snorkel. According to their website, “Stingray City was created by accident in the mid-80s, when fishermen, returning to port, anchored in the calm waters of the Sound to clean their catch and discard bait overboard. The stingrays, drawn by the smell of the fish, quickly became accustomed to the ‘free meal’ and stayed. Today, the rays regularly dine on the squid provided by divers and snorkelers. Coral Gardens, a coral reef covered in 10 feet of clear turquoise water, features some of the most spectacular coral formations in the world….and Star Fish Snorkel: Visit a magical location where you will snorkel above huge, colorful star fish.”

We took a bus to a boat. The kids were excited.

Stingray City is a sandbar, so we were able to get out of the boat and stand in the water. The other stops were not low water, so it was more difficult for those of us who aren’t the best swimmers. And I still haven’t mastered the art of snorkeling. The tour guides brought up conch shells and starfish for us to see!

On the way back, we saw this house and it was for sale. Hmmm.

We also saw this guy:

Have you ever swum with stingrays? Snorkeled with starfish? Tell me about it!

We've snorkel with starfish and saw a sting ray in Costa Rica but didn't get near. You look like you had an amazing time. Your pictures are so neat. What an adventure it must have been for the kiddos. How did the little one do?

it was a good time for all...Simon didn't venture into the water though! The other kids did but not for very long.

I swam with sting rays in Grand Cayman as a kid and then again on my honeymoon (also in Grand Cayman) - it was awesome both times!

So beautiful! If we weren't living in Hawaii, I'd be missing the Caribbean so much! I definitely miss cruising though. We got to swim with sea turtles on our last snorkel excursion.

there are cruises and sea turtles in hawaii! actually the first time I went snorkeling was in hawaii at molokini.

I can't snorkel. I get freaked out and panic but my parents love it. What a cool adventure!

I swam with dolphins on Grand Cayman and we went to a sea turtle farm. You should buy the house! :-)

I can't snorkel either. I always think I need to swallow when I go under and it just doesn't work.

I heard about the sea turtle farm but we didn't go there!

I went to the sea turtle farm once too, it's pretty neat for a one time thing. We went because our sting ray tour was cancelled due to weather on that particular visit to Grand cayman, I got to hold a huge turtle ! It was pretty cool!

I was just remembering a time in Key West in which my ex swam with dolphins and stingrays and I did neither! Why didn't I? Ugh! One of those times you regret more the things you don't do, than the things you do.
