We left off when we were staying in Key Largo, and unfortunately it was a bit cold so we didn’t have a lot of opportunity to make full use of the resort amenities where we were staying, but we made the most of it.
At some point that morning I believe, we saw that we had an alert where we were able to change our flight home for free, and it looked like there were no flights available until later in the week, which we thought was strange. I didn’t want to stay longer than we planned on, but of course, that became out of our control later that day!
Anyway, in the morning, Simon really wanted to try fishing at the resort. I went out with him and Dave, but couldn’t stay too long with it being windy as well as cold!
We started our journey to Key West, with our first stop being at a bookstore and our second at a brewery – to make both Dave and me happy!
We also stopped to take some pictures off the highway.
And saw another iguana!
Once in Key West, we got settled in our room and headed out to check out the town. First, around the hotel.
Then we started walking into the town itself, and it started pouring!
Around the mile 0 sign, we were in a store and Simon was going to buy a pen. The woman who worked there was talking to herself and made a comment about everything Kanye says being true. We walked out of there so fast. Zachary went to leave a google review and saw that others have complained about this store owner spouting political rants, so I guess we were not alone!
We had dinner at the one kosher restaurant in Key West, which is tiny and involved everyone sitting under a tent since it was pouring, so it was intimate. The food was good though!
We also passed this collection of metal chickens named Beyonce (if you get the reference…)
Sometime during the night, it became apparent that all the flights out of Fort Lauderdale (and soon we realized everywhere else too) were canceled on Wednesday and Thursday, so we had to reschedule our flight to Sunday. I think Friday was available, but we decided we’d be better off staying for the weekend. So I was a little annoyed and stressed by the things I had to reschedule (and the blog posts I hadn’t written), but oh well.
That morning, we visited the Butterfly Conservatory. We had been to Key West once before when Gabbie was 9 months old, and I wanted to revisit this! First, we had a close encounter with a rooster!
Next up, butterflies!
There are also flamingos!
When I was here with Gabbie previously, I had taken this rather amusing photo of her, so we wanted to recreate it!
Simon wanted his picture in the same place.
After we finished there, Dave went to get the car while the kids and I walked a bit. I was annoyed that I hadn’t had a second cup of coffee, so we went to a cafe to get some. Then we drove over to the Mallory Square area and walked around there a bit. We finally had some sun! There was another photo that Gabbie and I wanted to recreate:
We found it, but it was a little different!
Walking around:
That afternoon, we started heading back towards Fort Lauderdale. We had planned to stay near the airport that night as we’d be leaving the next day. We didn’t change that plan because Zachary was still scheduled to fly to NYC for his youth group weekend – thankfully not on Southwest! And we had dinner plans near there as well. On the way back:
Next time I should be able to wrap up the rest of our time in Florida, as the planned trip ended and the additional days were mostly spent back with the family!
