Our annual trip to Florida started and ended with changed plans. Things all worked out in the end, but things were rearranged and were unexpected in a few ways! To start with, I wanted to recap our travel down to Florida and our first day there, when we visited Green Cay Nature Center.
We got to the airport early. We were worried about it being busy, but it wasn’t bad. Dave has signed up for pre-check status, so he and the kids went through the fast lane while I went through the regular lane on my own. We didn’t have a direct flight, so our first stop was in New Orleans – home of the Cafe du Monde beignet.
After a quick stop in this airport, our second flight departed. It was extremely bumpy and turbulent, I declared I’d never fly again, and I had a sugar crash from eating the beignet and nothing else until we landed in Florida.
We got a late night meal of sushi and poke and met another traveling family who ended up having a mutual friend with Gabbie. The girls took a photo together and sent it to their mutual friend and it was all quite amusing. From there we headed to our Air BnB.
Staying at an Air BnB was the first of our changed plans. Simon had tested positive for Covid within 10 days before the trip and my parents weren’t sure they wanted us to stay with them so soon afterwards. We found a place in Delray Beach and it was nice to be able to spread out there for the first 3 nights. The kids even all had their own rooms.

On our first official morning of the trip we decided to invite both sets of our parents (my parents live in FL, Dave’s are there for the winter) to meet us at Green Cay Nature Center. This is a location we have often visited in the past, but we enjoy looking for birds and alligators! Most of us walked on the boardwalk while Simon and Dave’s mom sat down near the entrance since it is harder for her to walk the whole length.
Hello Mr. Alligator.
After our walk, we separated from the family and went to have lunch, plus Carvel – buy one get one sundaes on Wednesdays!
Then we headed over to my parents’ community to swim in their pool.
We met Dave’s parents for dinner and concluded the day lighting Hanukkah candles at their apartment!
Much more to come when I continue my Florida recap posts next week!
