Last week I introduced you to the Letter of the Week Preparatory Curriculum that I started with Simon. This week’s theme was Jungle. I mentioned that I wasn’t sure how I was going to teach Simon the jungle theme and it did prove to be challenging. I did discover that we owned the book Rumble in the Jungle, so that became our book of the week!
On Monday I printed a picture that was supposed to be a jungle, but really is a bunch of animals. Simon was happy – he loves animals! When pointing at the picture this week, he identified monkey, lion, elephant, and a new one for him – rhino – but did not label the picture as a jungle. When I asked him where the monkeys live he answered “zoo.” He enjoyed the book of the week, which introduced a variety of animals that live in the jungle. I also used the page with the chimpanzees to show Simon our weekly vocabulary word – vines. As you can see, I didn’t have a print out for our poster with vines!
On Tuesday we learned the color green. We colored our square from last week with a green marker. When Simon is asked what color something is he will normally say blue. He will repeat green when asked though. On Wednesday we added the letter B. We did a bit of green coloring on the B. On Thursday we added the number 2. We put 2 stickers on the number 2. I went with the theme and we added an elephant and a chimpanzee sticker!
Finally, today we replaced our nursery rhyme with I Had a Little Nut Tree. I did not know this rhyme previously. So far, Simon seems to like hearing me say the rhyme.
Next week’s theme is kittens! I know we have a book about a cat, but I will have to look for a book about kittens!
