Goals: A Look Back and A Look Forward

Tuesday, January 9, 2018

Last year when I wrote my list of goals for the year, I pointed out that a year is a long time to plan for. That turned out to be true, as things changed during the year and not all of my plans were possible! I went back to look at the goals I wrote for last year and as it turns out, some of them were in my mind to include on my list this year too! I like my goals to be attainable and measurable, rather than subjective as to whether I’ve actually fulfilled them. However, I still managed to make goals like “do such and such more.” How am I supposed to measure if I did it more? More than what?

Here’s a look back at the goals I made last year:

Fitness Goals

  • Exercise 5 times per week: I started out exercising 5 or even 6 times a week, right into the summer. Unfortunately, that has tapered off. I still go to the gym 3-4 times a week, but I’m not working out on the in-between days. What I have been keeping up with (until the freezing temps) is daily walks, which I hope to continue!
  • Lose 20-30 pounds: Sadly, I’m not the type of person who can eat better and lose the weight. I have to eat perfectly and I have to work out hard. So I am about 10 pounds up from my lowest weight and I didn’t lose 20-30 pounds.
  • Lose inches (2 inches per month?): I also didn’t lose inches.
  • Drink more water: Did I drink more water? Probably not.
  • Do my version of the 21-Day Fix again: I did not do the 21-Day Fix this year.

Thoughts: This looks like a big fail to me!

House Goals

  • Declutter using the 91 Day Declutter Challenge Schedule: I DID complete the 91 Day Declutter Challenge.
  • Do the consignment sale with the kids’ clothes:  I did the Spring consignment sale but not the fall one.
  • Have a toy sale: I didn’t have a toy sale because I ended up included the toys in the consignment sale!
  • Keep the house decluttered by cleaning up more often and putting things away:  I still need to work on putting things away more often.
  • Make each room functional and with places to keep the things we use in that room: I feel like I did make our rooms more functional, but there are still spots that need help.

Thoughts: The Declutter Challenge was very helpful. I need to go over some areas in our house again. There are also some drop zones that I would love to rework because they are always driving me crazy!

Blog Goals

  • Create more pinnable posts: Done.
  • Reach 1000 followers on Instagram: Done, I actually reached 1000 pretty early on and I thought I might be able to do much better, but I only reached 2000 followers just this week.
  • Co-host a link-up or swap (or both!): Done.
  • Update About Me page: I think so.

Thoughts: Looks like I did pretty well on my simple blog goals! I wish I could do even better!

Family Goals

  • Celebrate Gabbie’s Bat Mitzvah in March: Done.
  • Go to Gabbie’s dance competition / trip to Branson: This got canceled and my nephew ended up getting married and we went to NJ for the month instead!
  • Sign up Zachary for camp: Done.
  • Have Gabbie and Simon stay at their grandparents (while Zachary is at camp) and go somewhere with Dave: We ended up doing this before Zachary left for camp, so all three kids stayed with their grandparents!
  • Have guests over more often: I don’t know if we had guests over more than the previous year or not. Probably not.

Thoughts: Plans change, but we had a good year overall as a family!

Self Goals (other than fitness)

  • Read at least 30 books: Done.
  • Don’t do things that don’t make me happy: I forgot about this, but I think I did ok.
  • Finish my crochet row a day afghan: Done.
  • Like the photos that I take or learn to make them better: I think I’m getting better.
  • Volunteer more: I just finished helping with something so I’d say yes!
  • Hang out with friends more: Done, I think!

And now, it’s time to make new goals for 2018! I’ve had over a week to think about them and time to read everyone else’s goals too, so let’s hope I came up with some good ones. I’m also going to incorporate the TBB Asks questions because they are on a resolution theme!
