Running Update


Have I mentioned I am training for a 1/2 marathon? Dave and I both are. We are flying down to Florida on November 8; the 1/2 marathon is on the night of November 10 – which is my birthday! I chose this specific 1/2 for that very reason. It is at night, and it’s on my birthday. I’m not a morning person at all, and for the regular Disney World marathon I would have to be awake at 4AM! Well, I will probably still be awake at 4AM for this one, but I’d rather stay up then wake up!

I’ve been training via a program I edited from runnersworld.com. You can put in a recent time and distance you have completed and the date of your race and it will give you a training schedule. My schedule came out with times slower than I normally run, so I took a minute off of all of them. They are still slower than I normally run! For example, Tuesday’s run called for 4 miles at 14.38 minutes per mile. I ran 4.19 at 12.25 minutes per mile. Today’s run is a tempo run totaling 4 miles. The 2 middle miles are supposed to be run at 12.55 minutes per mile. On Sundays I am supposed to do long runs. They are the hardest part for me, and obviously the part I need to work on the most if I have any chance of completing 13.1 miles!
For my long runs, I want to add more music to my running play list. Here is what is on it right now:

I'm totally into Black Keys right now when running. I prefer rock to hip hop when running, though. And of course, my staple is Born to Run - you've got to add that!! Also - a few long songs in there (like Scenes From an Italian Restaurant or recently American Pie) help me zone out and get a good distance done without thinking about it. :) I also sometimes add one of my first songs (the first 4-5 are like my FAVE running songs and get me off to a good start) to near the end to pump me up again.

A recent fave for the middle for me is Kelly Clarkson's What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stronger. When it comes on I'm like, HECK YA! This won't kill me!

Awesome work training!! Once you start long runs and get to the 5, 6, 7 mile mark, you'll be so proud you'll want to keep adding and adding. At least that's how it worked for me a few years ago when I ran a 10 mile race. I was like "Oh, 6 miles, I did that. This week I'm doing 7 so there!"
