Welcome to the Not Just a Mom Link Up hosted by myself, Adrienne, Jen, Joanne, Lauren, and Sarah! This month, we are talking about how we became moms. So this topic isn’t really about how we are more than just moms! I have written about birth stories in the past, but I don’t think I’ve ever covered my actual path to becoming a mom.
19 years ago, I was 25 years old and no one took me seriously when I mentioned that I was not regularly ovulating. In fact, the first doctor I told about this said I should go on birth control pills to make things regular. That worked, but didn’t address the underlying issue. As it turns out, I had a few issues that could have caused my problem – PCOS and a prolactinoma to name two – and some medications that would address those issues and allow ovulation to occur.
While I tried IUI, that didn’t help either, so I ultimately went through an IVF cycle in order to get pregnant. Luckily, at the time, insurance covered the expenses, and luckily as well, I didn’t deal with losses or negative results. I was told I was pregnant with twins, but soon after there was only one embryo present, which became Gabbie.
Two years later, I was set to go to an appointment with my reproductive specialist, when I got a positive pregnancy test. At the appointment, I told the doctor and she did an ultrasound to check things out. Because no heartbeat was detected, the doctor suspected I would have a miscarriage. However, it turns out it was merely too early to detect a heartbeat, and that embryo became Zachary. I did drink wine that night…oops.
Two years after that, I seemed to be ovulating regularly and could even detect when ovulation was occurring. While I might have liked to have my 3rd child two years after my 2nd, I didn’t get pregnant immediately. But I did get pregnant almost 13 years and 9 months ago, right after we moved to Kansas. And that became Simon!
So, in a nutshell, that’s how I became a mom three times. If you wrote about how you became a mom, you can link up with us here and come back next month when we share our top 5 favorite family activities.
