We are now done with half of the school year and it’s time for a mid year school update.
[Simon]
Simon is still struggling in both English and math classes. In English, he did quite well on his first essay (with help from me) but still got a B for the semester because he received a low mark on an assignment that he only completed part of. He insists that he didn’t know he had to do the part he didn’t do. I find myself concerned about his organization skills as he is always losing things or forgetting things. He is still getting tutoring in math and at times he does well on tests but it is not every time. I found out that he can’t take his tests in a separate room unless he has a learning plan in place and I can’t get a learning plan in place without having him evaluated for a learning disability, which apparently insurance does not cover and I’m at a loss as to where to go from here.
[Zachary]
Zachary has found himself a bit more motivated to do better in school now that college is on the horizon. This quarter he managed to get all As and only 2 Bs. He took the PSAT and the pre-ACT so now he has an idea on these tests for the future. He is hoping to apply to colleges test optional though. With the ACT, he completed a career survey and it came back that he should work with “things.” I thought this was amusing because while that is pretty general, it is very him! His main interest area is transportation and civil engineering.
[Gabbie]
Well, Gabbie is in her final semester of high school. She has submitted all of her college applications but she needs to contact one of the schools about something not connecting to her application as it was supposed to. She applied to 8 schools and has heard back from 4. All 4 of the ones she has heard from have offered her some scholarship money. She has gotten into 2 of the 4 honors programs. One she didn’t hear about yet and one she didn’t get into – which is crazy to me because her grades are so good! Their program must be extremely subjective! It will be awhile before she knows where she’ll go next year, with four more schools to hear back from!
Here’s to another great semester for all!
