As of last week, we have finished the 2021-22 school year. It was somewhat of a transition back to normal, as we started out wearing masks all the time and finished up with masks optional. We started out worried about a full school building, but we made it through. Here’s a look back at my kids’ school years.
Gabbie
This year Gabbie:
Was in 11th grade.
Started school in her dance uniform as the dance team and cheerleaders welcome the students back.
Drove herself to school.
Started at 7 AM or earlier many of the days that she had dance.
Danced with both school and her dance school.
Was bubbe in the Jewish Nutcracker.
Was an assistant photo editor for the yearbook and took 50 of the photos in the yearbook.
Kept up with school even with all the days she had to miss for Jewish holidays.
Also had to miss a week when Zachary had Covid.
Went to Homecoming and Prom.
Got pointe shoes.
Worked at the Vacations Days program at the J on some of her days off of school.
Was inducted into National Honor Society.
Went on her first college visit.
Took 3 AP tests.
Got all As.
Will be a Yearbook Photo Editor next year.
Will be a dance team officer next year.
Looks different from the first day of school because her hair is longer.
Zachary
This year Zachary:
Was in 9th grade.
Went on his delayed 8th grade camping trip.
Struggled in English class but improved greatly over the year.
Had a harder time than normal in math class.
Did amazing in World History class and Science class.
Decided to stay at his current school.
Got Invisalign.
Had Covid (a very mild case).
Went skiing for the first time.
Went on a school trip to the Civil Rights historical sites in the US South.
Was in the high school play.
Will be working this summer at the poolside cafe.
Continued to wear masks even when they were optional because his friends were (for a variety of health reasons).
Has his permit and consistently requests to drive.
Looks different from the first day of school because of his Invisalign. Maybe he looks older too!
Simon
This year Simon:
Was in 6th grade.
Liked being in middle school.
Played soccer.
Did very well in his classes with math being his hardest subject.
Loved fostering dogs.
Volunteered with me walking dogs at the shelter.
Got vaccinated.
Got glasses to wear all the time instead of just reading glasses.
Went on his first overnight youth group trip.
Was in the middle school play.
Went on his 6th grade camping trip.
Will be doing one week at day camp and two weeks at overnight camp this summer.
Looks different from the first day of school because of his glasses! And I think he does look older as well. He got his hair cut after we took this picture!
All in all, it was a good school year!
