I’m a little late getting on the Jojo Moyes train! I have heard great things about her books and I finally was able to pick up One Plus One from the library recently. I have to say it took me a little while to get into it and that is probably because the author is British and the book takes place in Great Britain. For whatever reason, I don’t prefer books that take place in Britain. On the other hand, once I got into the story, I was able to realize why everyone loves Moyes’ writing and books. “Suppose your life sucks. A lot. Your husband has done a vanishing act, your teenage stepson is being bullied, and your math whiz daughter has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that you can’t afford to pay for. That’s Jess’s life in a nutshell—until an unexpected knight in shining armor offers to rescue them. Only Jess’s knight turns out to be Geeky Ed, the obnoxious tech millionaire whose vacation home she happens to clean. But Ed has big problems of his own, and driving the dysfunctional family to the Math Olympiad feels like his first unselfish act in ages . . . maybe ever.” Jess and Ed are two very different people. Jess is a house cleaner for rich people and Ed owns one of the houses she cleans. What she doesn’t know is that he is going through money related problems of his own. I imagine driving a family hours away could be disastrous, and Jess’s family certainly could have caused Ed to go off the deep end, but instead, he falls for them and they fall for him. I loved the bond he formed with the children. Perhaps the best character in the book is the big, farting dog called Norman. He is a wonderful hero and a big part of the story. There are some very funny parts of this book and also some that will make you cry. The best part is that the ending is very satisfying!
