For the past few months, Gabbie’s class has been working on poetry. I previously posted a few of the poems she brought in to school. The unit culminated yesterday with the 2nd Grade Poetry Café.
Each of the 2nd graders read original poems that he or she wrote this year. First, their teacher asked them a question regarding either why they like poetry or why they chose to read the poem they chose. After reading their poem, they asked the audience why they liked their poem. Both a student and a parent had to answer for each poem.
The poems that the kids brought in throughout the unit were bound into one anthology and the original poems were bound into another. The kids each got a copy of the anthologies.
The Poetry Café began with the class reciting a poem inviting us in, complete with hand motions.
If you are a dreamer, come in.
If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar,
a hoper, a prayer, a magic-bean-buyer.
If you’re a pretender, come sit by my fire, for we have some flax-golden tales to spin.
Come in! Come in!

Soon it was Gabbie’s turn. Her poem was called Dance and was about ballet:
She did a nice job reading her poem!

It was a nice morning and I enjoyed getting to see the 2nd graders read their poetry and confidently discuss poetry and each other’s poems. I always love when I get to see what my kids are doing and learning in school!
