What I’ve Been Reading #136–The Things We Wish Were True

Library

I received a copy of The Things We Wish Were True by Marybeth Mayhew Whalen from TLC Book Tours in exchange for my review. The story of the people who make up a small town neighborhood, I really enjoyed reading and getting to know each of the characters in this book.

“From the outside, Sycamore Glen, North Carolina, might look like the perfect all-American neighborhood. But behind the white picket fences lies a web of secrets that reach from house to house. Up and down the streets, neighbors quietly bear the weight of their own pasts—until an accident at the community pool upsets the delicate equilibrium. And when tragic circumstances compel a woman to return to Sycamore Glen after years of self-imposed banishment, the tangle of the neighbors’ intertwined lives begins to unravel. During the course of a sweltering summer, long-buried secrets are revealed, and the neighbors learn that it’s impossible to really know those closest to us. But is it impossible to love and forgive them?”

The book is told in multiple view points from each of the main characters that live in the neighborhood, from the young girl left in charge of her younger brother, to the single dad of two trying to cope after his wife has left, to the older woman who takes care of everyone around her. The lives of the characters intersect in sometimes surprising ways, making the story interesting and fun to read. One thing that stands out about the story is that each of the characters are wishing for certain things to be true – such as the husband who wants another child while he wife does not and the woman who wishes she did not have to return to the neighborhood that she fled when she was younger. However, the characters come together and learn to accept the truths in their lives, growing and accepting themselves and each other in the process.

I am able to give away a copy of this book! If you would love to read it, just leave me a comment and I will pick a winner next week!

Apple Picking

For the past few years, we have made a fall tradition out of visiting Cider Hill Family Orchard and picking our own apples. Last year there was a mix of red and green apples, but this year, we mostly picked green ones. I once again tried to use my manual mode on my camera, but there was a setting that I forgot to change and you can probably tell that it made my pictures a bit too green for about the first half until I realized!

Have you been apple picking yet this year?
