Zachary’s class has been working on their poetry unit. For each assigned theme, I help Zachary find a poem and then he brings them to school and shares them with his class. So far we have done the themes of funny, animals, and nature. The last theme is “international” and can be a poem written by someone from another country or about another country. I cannot find such a poem! I have a whole book called Modern Israeli Poetry, but I found that either the poems are too long or too hard to read. I also have a book called Bialik for Kids which is a book of Hebrew poems by Chaim Nahman Bialik, but they are all in Hebrew! I would love any suggestions you might have!!
Meanwhile, here are the poems that Zachary brought to school so far.
I Know All the Sounds that the Animals Make
By Jack Prelutsky
I know all the sounds that the animals make,
and make them all day from the moment I wake,
I roar like a mouse and I purr like a moose,
I hoot like a duck and I moo like a goose.
I squeak like a cat and I quack like a frog,
I oink like a bear and I honk like a hog,
I croak like a cow and I bark like a bee,
no wonder the animals marvel at me.
The Little Turtle
by Vachel Lindsay
There was a little turtle.
He lived in a box.
He swam in a puddle.
He climbed on the rocks.
He snapped at a mosquito.
He snapped at a flea.
He snapped at a minnow.
And he snapped at me.
He caught the mosquito.
He caught the flea.
He caught the minnow.
But he didn’t catch me.
Snow
by Mary Ann Hoberman
Snow
Snow
Lots of snow
Everywhere we look and everywhere we go
Snow in the sandbox
Snow on the slide
Snow on the bicycle
Left outside
Snow on the steps
And snow on my feet
Snow on the sidewalk
Snow on the sidewalk
Snow on the sidewalk
Down the street.
Again, if you have any ideas of an international themed poem, please let me know!
