I may have mentioned a few times that one of my goals this year was to run a sub-10 minute mile. I’ve been running on the treadmill at a 6.2, which translates to a 9 minute 40 second mile. This past Sunday I reached the point in my training plan where I was supposed to run for 8 minutes, walk for 2, then run for 10. The 8 minutes was hard, but once I started the 2nd running interval, I had to stop at about 7 minutes in due to feeling nauseous. I then decided I should do the 10 minute interval first, this way I know I get in my goal, and then I’d work on building the 2nd interval.
It worked! Tuesday this week I ran my first sub-10 minute mile. On the treadmill, which means it doesn’t really count, but still. Then I ran about 4 minutes and another 2 minutes afterwards. Since I signed up for Katie’s Virtual 5K, I pushed even harder and managed to run for 13 minutes at 6.2 mph. After that I did a few more running intervals and finished 3.1 miles in 34:31.
My goal time for the 5K was 34 minutes, and even though I didn’t hit that, this is still a PR for me, as my fastest 5K time before was 36:14 at the Jingle In July 5K! I’m actually looking forward to continuing to build up my speed and getting a real PR in a race this spring.
If you don’t already read Katie’s blog, I highly recommend it. Recently I commented on how fast she runs and she told me her fast speed used to be 5 mph – now it’s like twice that! – so that gives me hope on my own improvement! Running this pace is still difficult for me, but I know it’s much faster than I could run last year at this time, so that’s something!
