The Story of a Hat

When Zachary was 3 1/2, I bought him a hat and told him he should wear it on our trip to Israel. Soon he began wearing it every day, even though his daddy said it made him look like a tourist.

I thought it was cute and it made Zachary happy. At some point the hat got older and Zachary started wearing a different hat. Then he started pre-K and started wearing a kippah to school. His hat stayed in his room. I just uncovered it while reorganizing his things and felt that I could not get rid of such a piece of my Zachary.

I thought the hat might look good in a shadow box. Then I realized that one of my 25 cent garage sale frames was deep enough to fit the hat inside. It even had some cool corrugated cardboard that looked like a nice background.

I had painted the frame white, and now I wanted it blue. I mixed two colors and got painting.

All framed up! I wasn’t sure what Zachary would think so I didn’t hang it yet. He said he likes it though!

What do you think?

Finished Projects

A bit ago I found an idea for making plates into chalk boards. Here is one place I saw it, and here is the one that I chose to copy! I wanted to buy chalk board paint until I saw that it costs more than I wanted to spend. Some searching in my basement led me to discover that I already own some! I picked up 4 red plates at Goodwill (originally Target brand but I got them for 50 cents each) and got to work.

When I removed the tape, I saw some paint had bled underneath, plus I didn’t really get the tape on in a perfect circle, so I did some surgery with a small screwdriver.

Yesterday I found a plate display rack and here is the final result:

I wrote the typical Love Laugh Live (although I think it’s supposed to be Live Laugh Love) but I’m open to ideas for other 3 word sayings I can use!

Next up, I got to work on these wooden hamsas that I bought in Israel something like 8 years ago!

I thought the turquoise bling added to the look I was going for!
I had also bought this red leather ribbon at the same time in Israel, so I glued it around the outside, leaving a loop for the nail:

I think they fit in nicely on my entry hall display!

Road Trip 2012 Part 4 – San Antonio

Thursday June 7 was our last day in San Antonio. We started the long trip home that morning as well. And it was Zachary’s 5th birthday! We started out the morning at the Alamo and took a walk on the River Walk for the last time.

We stopped back at the outlets where we hit up the Disney Outlet – at the last minute we found lots of cheap pins to buy to add to our trading collection! And we went to Ikea. My current peeve about Kansas City is that we don’t have Ikea! Although if we did, I’d probably be there daily! We went for dinner in Dallas and afterwards we celebrated Zachary’s birthday at the supermarket!

We stayed overnight somewhere in Oklahoma – the GPS address the hotel provided was totally nowhere near the hotel, so it took us some time to actually find the place. Once we got there, the kids all woke up and spent some time screaming before they fell asleep – causing me to swear off road trips forever! Luckily, we made it home the following day with no further events!

Zachary’s New Furniture

The other day I posted pictures of Zachary’s room as it had been since we moved into our house 2.5 years ago. Here is the furniture we bought, found via craigslist:

The dresser was the piece in the best condition. There is also a matching nightstand. The photo on the right is the bed – it is a platform bed and I’d already taken the drawers out. The bed was painted black, but I didn’t think it was the right color, so I chose a dark brown paint at Home Depot.
IMG_7786The bookshelf wasn’t included in the original listing, but we got it anyway, which is good since we really needed one! It was also painted black and I repainted it the same brown as the bed.
Once again, the before from the left side of his room:

His new bookshelf and nightstand! I also painted that shelf, which I’d found at a garage sale. That’s a dinosaur egg up there! And the bed. He also got two new prints via etsy for his birthday from my mom! You can see them here and here!
More updates to come!

Upcycling Old Clothing

Two of my recent craft projects have been copies of ideas I have seen repeatedly on various blogs and on pinterest. However, I did one thing slightly differently than the ideas I have seen, which is why I am sharing them here! When my projects needed fabric, I repurposed old clothes.

The first project is a jewelry display. When you search jewelry display on pinterest, many similar ideas appear, such as:

I decided to make my own when I spray painted a 25 cent garage sale picture frame and could not get the glass back into the frame. What makes my project unique is that I decided to use an old sweater as the fabric backing of my display. This sweater even has sentimental value because Dave gave it to me as a gift. I wore it until it had holes. And now it hangs on the wall!

The back is a bit of a mess, but it doesn’t matter!

I used cup hooks and pushed them into the top of the frame.

Here it is, on the wall, with necklaces!

The second project that I completed is a fabric covered bulletin board. Again, this idea is found all over pinterest:

I decided to use thumb tacks instead of upholstery nails, and for my fabric I used a skirt that I no longer wear!
