November in Review

Friday, November 30, 2012

I can’t believe it’s time for another month in review blog post! November turned out to be an awesome month including two vacations and other fun things! Here are some of the highlights:

Family Activities:

  • After our last long run before the 1/2 marathon, we went downtown for a Restaurant Depot run and discovered that the antique stores were open. I am dying to go back and check them out for real! Here are some shots of the cool area we were in:

  • Dave’s parents came in to watch the kids while Dave and I went off to Disney for the 1/2 marathon!

  • We went to the zoo, surprise surprise!
  • We tried to do some geocaching, but Mommy couldn’t find the cache, so the kids just traded treasure box supplies amongst themselves!

Coming up:

  • In December we will be celebrating Hanukkah.
  • The kids will get to attend Winter Camp!

Happy December everyone!

What I’ve Been Reading #5

I read about this “mostly true memoir” somewhere out in blog land. This book was written by Jenny Lawson, aka The Blogess, whose blog I don’t even read! This book “takes readers on a hilarious journey recalling her bizarre upbringing in rural Texas, her devastatingly awkward high school years, and her relationship with her long-suffering husband, Victor.” Hilarious may be an understatement. I was laughing so much while reading in bed that I had to be careful not to wake up Dave! When I got to the chapter about BeyoncĂ© the Giant Metal Chicken I realized why I found the rest of the book so funny – I have read this blog post multiple times and it never ceases to crack me up! I am not sure why I didn’t realize the book was written by the same person who wrote about the Giant Metal Chicken! My favorite part of the book though was the part about how for her, her house is clean if nothing sticks to her or gives her cholera. Her husband on the other hand likes his house clutter free. Of course, he likes her to do the cleaning. I can totally relate!

Our final book group read for the year was Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares. An interesting choice, I think! “Lily has left a red notebook full of challenges on a favorite bookstore shelf, waiting for just the right guy to come along and accept its dares. But is Dash that right guy?” The interesting thing about this book is that the two writers wrote their chapters separately without consulting each other as they went (and I did find one inconsistency that probably was there because of this!). I enjoyed the red notebook scavenger hunt in the first chapter. Thereafter it got a little less of a scavenger hunt and a little more silly. This book was fun, but not amazing. Sometimes I think I’m too critical – but as far as books about teens go, this wasn’t my favorite. It was funny at times and the characters are enjoyable. I look forward to finding out why our book group member chose it for us to read!

Our Thanksgiving

Thursday, November 29, 2012

If you read my post on Monday with my packing lists, you may have picked up on the fact that we took a Thanksgiving trip. (Or if you’re a stalker like Leslie, you might have realized from my instagram pictures. Just kidding about Leslie being a stalker). We got up super early on Thanksgiving morning and flew to New Jersey by way of Charlotte, NC to visit our families. Other than this small incident, the flights went smoothly!

(Quoted from Facebook) I walked into a family bathroom at the airport w Zachary and a lady followed us in. I told her it was a one room bathroom but she headed for the toilet anyway! So much for waiting your turn!

We arrived in New Jersey just on time for Thanksgiving lunch / dinner / linner (?) at my parents’ house!

After eating, the kids headed downstairs to visit with their favorite toys in my parents’ basement. Some of them were my favorites from when I lived there too!

I took the opportunity to take a picture of my childhood room. My parents’ house is for sale, so this may be the last time I see it. Trust me, when I lived there it was not this neat!

After play time (and dessert), we headed to Dave’s parents’ house for our next stop. Even though we did not eat Thanksgiving dinner with them, we got to see 5 of our nieces and nephews plus Dave’s two first cousins and their kids. It makes me happy that my kids get to play with their cousins!

After everyone left, we all went to bed. I was exhausted from being up so early in the morning, but I could not fall asleep! Thus began my long, tired weekend. I will share more about it very soon!

Rapunzel Hat

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

Last week I finally finished Gabbie’s Rapunzel hat. I actually finished the knitting back in the spring, but she wanted flowers attached and I neglected to attach them until now! I think it looks pretty cute on her, don’t you?

I am not counting the Rapunzel hat as one of my 6 completed knitted objects on my 35 by 35 list since I technically finished it awhile ago. However, here is one thing I did finish for the handmade gift exchange at Craftaholics Anonymous! This is just a sneak peak, in case my recipient happens to be reading:

I hope she likes it!

PS I would be willing to take orders for either of these hats!

Flashback Feature #6 – Thanksgiving 2010

Tuesday, November 27, 2012

Strangely enough, all the posts I made about our Thanksgiving trip to NJ two years ago are missing their pictures. So for today’s Flashback Feature, I am going to post the missing photos here. Two years ago, Gabbie was 5, Zachary was 3, and Simon was 3 months old!

Some of the boy cousins.

Girl cousins.

This is the boy whose Bar Mitzvah we celebrated!

And since we’re talking past Thanksgivings, here is what we did last year (friends, not cousins):

Later this week or early next week I will hopefully post new pictures of the cousins and we’ll be able to see how they have grown!
